History

There were at least three known fabulous cilizations--the Maytas, the Olmecs, and later the Toltecs--that lead the wealthy Aztec empire. This empire was conquered in 1519 by the Spanish under the supervision of Hernando Cortes. Spain took over Mexico as part of the Viceroyality of New Spain for the following 300 years, until September 16, 1810, when the Mexicans rebelled and regained their independance in 1821.
